Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS Assessment)

ESOS Assessment and Consultancy

The UK Government established Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) to implement Article 8 ()4-6) of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU). ESOS is a mandatory energy efficiency assessment scheme for organisations in the UK that meet the following qualification criteria:

  • Employ 250 or more people, or
  • Have an annual turnover in excess of 50 million euro (£38,937,777), and an annual balance sheet total in excess of 43 million euro (£33,486,489)

If your organisation meets the qualification criteria on 31 December 2014, you must carry an ESOS assessment and notify the Environment Agency by 5 December 2015.

If your organisation qualifies on 31 December 2014 and you fail to complete your first ESOS assessment by 5 December 2015, you may need to pay a penalty fee. For details, please visit the UK Government’s ESOS website: https://www.gov.uk/energy-savings-opportunity-scheme-esos

Briefly, if you qualify for ESOS assessment, you must:

  • Carry out an ESOS energy audit and/or implement one of the eligible standards (such as ISO 500001, Display Energy Certificates etc) that cover at least 90% of your total energy consumption
  • Appoint a qualified Lead ESOS Assessor
  • Engage your board members with the compliance process and review the energy audit reports
  • Complete your ESOS application online and notify the Environment Agency
