This meeting involved bringing together developing countries and UK researchers and representatives from other organisations to collaborate and forge networks. It was a great chance to discuss opportunities for maximising the contribution of Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF) and Newton Fund research into policy and practice.
GCRF belongs to the Research Councils UK (RCUK), and belongs to the BEIS (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) of the HM Treasury. The organisation addresses global challenges through disciplinary and interdisciplinary research, with £1.5 billion ODA funding by 2016-2021.
Newton Fund promotes economic development and social welfare by working with partner countries. Launched in April 2014 for 5 years with a budget of £75M per year, extended from 2019 to 2021 and expanding to £150m per year by 2021. Its expansion will be £735M UK investment to 2021.
The meeting allowed Exergy to be better equipped to engage with existing GCRF research projects and work with UK partners to respond to future GCRF and Newton Fund calls. Exergy Identified key development research and policy/practice priorities in the region (South America – Colombia) for future funding including research networks.
